First of all, don’t panic at all. As per the research conducted from government and health portals, no data published shows that COVID-19 has greater impact on pregnant people. The risk to a pregnant woman is same as to any other normal person. The only thing not to confuse with this virus is that pregnant people are at greater risk of getting sick from any respiratory viruses than people who are not pregnant.
Therefore, in case you are pregnant or breastfeeding or taking care of your toddler, be a bit more careful to reduce your risk of falling sick.
Few advises to be followed:
Few people might take this lightly, but it is advised that you take it seriously. Obviously not in stressful way that you start panicking every small bit. But at least be mindful enough. Maintain at least 6 feet distance from anyone who has come from outside or dose not live with you or exposed to any such virus
Washing hands at regular intervals will do the most of it:
Wash for at least 20 seconds. Before preparing meal or eating, before breastfeeding, after going to washroom or changing diapers, after touching any dirty clothes or utensils. In fact, you may use lukewarm water to wash hands or an alcohol-based sanitizer
Sneezing and coughing:
Make sure to cover your face when sneezing or coughing, and was your hands after that, or you can sanitize them as well
Cleaning and disinfecting:
Be mindful enough to disinfect or sanitize or clean your laundry or most used objects like electronic devices, phones, doorknobs, cabinets, etc.
As we all know that trials are being carried out for COVID vaccine. However, there is no one who has gained complete success till now. Meanwhile, it is advised to that you may have vaccines like influenza (flu) and Tdap vaccines this will help protect you and your baby
Do not skip or avoid your appointments:
If comfortable enough prefer making them via internet on phone calls or video calls. If necessary, ask your doctor when to make a visit. Do not hesitate to ask questions like what is the status of corona patients in their clinic, what all precautions are needed to be taken during the visit both for yourself and your baby. Do not avoid going hospital in case of urgent needs or emergencies
If your date is due:
If your delivery date is near make sure to choose a professional health care service. Prioritize your safety and cleanliness. Ask about the precautions taken in the hospital. Be alert and mindful about the virus prone areas in the clinic or the hospital. Keep your essential items handy
Breastfeed your baby:
Breastfeed offers great immunity for the baby and protects baby from numerous illness and will help the child to grow.
Limited information was available on the fact whether COVID virus can be spread through breast milk or not. Still we will advise, if in case you turned out to be positive try maintaining distance from your baby. You can use expressed milk for this purpose. Ask a care giver to take care of the child and feed him the expressed milk bottle
